Recommended Ride: Forest Way East Grinstead-Groombridge

People often ask us what rides we recommend for those that are a bit “rusty” and want to keep the time spent on busy roads to a minimum.

Three of us set off on a beautiful off road 22 mile ride.  Running from East Grinstead to Groombridge the Forest Way is a shared use path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders – and we saw all of these on a lovely Spring Sunday in May.

Part of the Downs and Weald cycle route, this tree lined path takes you through the heart of the East Sussex countryside, through small fields and farms among wooded rolling hills.

The route follows a disused railway line and is flat and traffic free.  The area is part of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and provides an important habitat for wildlife.

Fellow athletes of course need a good lunch and there is a wonderful pub in Groombridge on the turn called The Crown which serves a very agreeable pint of Harveys.  Try a shared platter of either meat or fish and some cheesy chips to reenergise the system to fuel you for the journey back.

This ride is not a major “challenge” in that it is flat (ish) and the even surface makes for a smooth tranquil journey.  Our three e bikes serenely cruised by quite a few families and other conventional bike riders although personally I seldom am out of eco mode or even no assist.

In summary this is a stress free straightforward ride out and back on the same route.  It would be possible to extend the ride and even take in the Bluebell Railway but this would require some planning and rail transport if appropriate.

E bikesXduro Full Life 5.0

My wife tried out the Haibike Full life with a Bosch CX system providing smooth intuitive response.  The full suspension flattens out the bumps and gives a comfortable ride across any terrain.  All white the bike has a female friendly frame geometry which is easy on the eye.  I was riding a Scott E Genius 910 2016.  This is a great bike with smooth gears and wonderful  34cm Fox full suspension.  I borrowed this bike from a colleague and he has not changed the saddle which was really uncomfortable.  I am used to the Selle Royale saddles and I now know why I use them!  I also missed the Ergon Grips which cushion the vibration and spread the load on the hands and wrists.  Amazing how small things make so much difference.
