Electric bike reviews: Scott e-MTBs versus the Granite Way

– Okehampton to Lydford

Circular Ride of 21 miles

granite way

This ride is flat and can be easily managed by riders of any ability.  It is an old converted railway track with an excellent surface and simply stunning views.  The terrain constantly changes with a panorama of Dartmoor grandeur to softer sheltered tree countryside.

The route is reserved for walkers and bikers with no cars so it is likely to get busy in the summer months.  In March it was quiet and we were very lucky with a sunny day and pleasant temperature.   You can park a car at the old Okehampton Station (for free) and this easily accesses the ride.

Again in summer there may be signed places to pull off and have a coffee or drink but in the winter months only pubs in nearby villages will be open so we completed the whole 10/11 miles having a coffee in Lydford in a lovely atmospheric pub called the Castle InnLydford has a couple of monuments which are worth a look.

We turned round and stopped at a the Bearslake Inn in Sourton coming no more than a mile off the cycle track but this was well worth it and we had a super pub lunch.  Dogs were welcome in both pubs.

After a great lunch we headed back to Okehampton sadly being caught in a rainstorm during the last mile.  British weather can be unpredictable.

Electric Bike Reviews – Scott e-Spark 720 / Scott e-Contessa 720

Two Scott mountain bikes with fatter off road tyres; (although any hybrid style of bike would cope with the good cycling surface).  I rode an e-Spark 720 full suspension bike with a 400wh Bosch motor and battery combination.  It was very quiet, responsive and comfortable although I did not set it up correctly for weight so it felt slightly skittish with an MTX seat post rack and loaded carrier.

This bike is a 2015 model with the latest Nyon display giving ride info and assistance settings/controls, zoomable SatNav maps, fitness and calorie info, and it also links to your mobile through Bluetooth.  This is a most impressive system which gives plenty of scope for the “techies” and delivers plenty of info. The other e-bike was the Scott e-Contessa designed for style and performance for active ladies.  This again houses the Bosch system with an Intuvia display which is easy to use and keeps things clean and simple.

Darcey the Springer spaniel enjoyed her day but would have liked a bit more sniffing time.  The pace with a dog averages 7/8 mph so it is more sedate and the journey is slower than the normal 10/15 mph usually achieved.

A great ride and fabulous cycle.  Not challenging but rewarding with magnificent views and quiet ever changing yet peaceful countryside.  The Granite Way is part of the 95 mile circular ride right around Dartmoor although most of the rest of the ride is on roads.

Thoroughly recommend.
